Muhammad ibn Fudayl reported, “Al-Walīd ibn Jumayʿ related to us from Abū al-Ṭufayl, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Mecca, he dispatched Khālid ibn al-Walīd to Nakhla, where the idol al-ʿUzzā stood. Khālid found it erected upon three acacia trees; he cut the trees down and demolished the shrine built over them. He then returned to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, and the Prophet said, ‘Go back, for you have not yet accomplished anything.’
Khālid went back. When the custodians—its gatekeepers—saw him approaching, they fled up the mountain crying, ‘O ʿUzzā, conceal yourself! O ʿUzzā, reveal yourself! Otherwise, perish despite yourself!’ Khālid reached the site and there stood a naked woman with dishevelled hair, throwing dust upon her head. He struck her with his sword and killed her.
He returned to the Prophet ﷺ and related what had happened. The Prophet said, ‘That was al-ʿUzzā.’ Abū al-Ṭufayl personally witnessed this event.
Ibn Isḥāq said: My father told me, quoting members of the family of Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca he ordered Bilāl to climb to the roof of the Kaʿbah and give the call to prayer. Some of the clan of Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ remarked, ‘Allah has honoured Saʿīd by causing him to die before he had to see this black man standing on top of the Kaʿbah.’
ʿUrwah likewise related that on the day of the Conquest the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered Bilāl to make the call to prayer from the Kaʿbah.
Al-Layth transmitted, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hind, that Abū Marrah, the freedman of ʿAqīl, told him that Umm Hānīʾ bint Abī Ṭālib said: In the year of the Conquest two men of Banū Makhzūm sought refuge with me, and I granted them protection. ʿAlī entered and said, ‘Shall I kill them?’ I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was in the upper part of Mecca. When he saw me, he welcomed me and asked, ‘What has brought you, Umm Hānīʾ?’ I said, ‘O Prophet of Allah, I have granted asylum to two men of my in-laws, but ʿAlī wishes to kill them.’ He replied, ‘We grant protection to those whom you have protected.’ He then rose to bathe, and Fāṭimah screened him, after which he took a garment.
