Ibn Tāhir relates in his al-Manthūr: “I heard Abū Ismāʿīl, Shaykh al-Islām, say, ‘Tirmidhī’s Jāmiʿ is more beneficial than the books of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, for only a scholar deeply versed in the discipline can perceive the benefit in those two, whereas everyone can access the benefit of the Jāmiʿ.’”
Ghunjar and others report that Abū ʿĪsā died on the thirteenth of Rajab in the year 279 AH, in Tirmidh.
133 – Ibn Mājah Muḥammad b. Yazīd
The ḥāfiẓ (hadith master), eminent authority, decisive proof, and exegete; Abū ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Mājah al-Qazwīnī, author of the Sunan, the History, and the Tafsīr, and the foremost ḥāfiẓ of Qazwīn in his era.
He was born in 209 AH.
He heard from ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Ṭanafusī, the ḥāfiẓ—he transmitted abundantly from him—Jubbārah b. al-Mughalis, one of his earliest teachers, and Muṣʿab b. ʿAbd Allāh.
= In some of its transmission lines one of the narrators is explicitly accused of fabrication; on this basis the compilers included the report transmitted by Muhammad ibn Saʿid al-Maslub and that of Muhammad ibn al-Saʾib al-Kalbi.
Indeed, they may also cite a narrator known for poor memory or for frequent confusion, but they usually flag the problem and do not leave it unmentioned.
They likewise reproduce the hadith of a sound and precise narrator, of one who makes only occasional mistakes, of one who errs more often, and—though rarely—of one whose reports are largely unreliable; in every case they state the narrator’s condition and do not remain silent about it.
