—in Baghdad—Abū al-Qāsim Aḥmad ibn al-Mubārak ibn Qafarjal informed us; ʿĀṣim ibn al-Ḥasan informed us; he said:
Abū ʿUmar ibn Mahdī al-Fārisī informed us; Abū ʿAbd-Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl dictated to us; Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī narrated to us; Abū Mus-hir narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh informed us; Baḥīr ibn Saʿd narrated to me, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from Abū al-Dardāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him),
from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Son of Adam! Perform for Me four rakʿahs at the beginning of the day and I will suffice you for its remainder.’” (1)
Al-Muʾammal ibn Muḥammad (2) and Ibn ʿAllān (3) wrote to us; they said:
Abū al-Yaman al-Kindī informed us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Shaybānī informed us; Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb informed us; Abū ʿUmar ibn Mahdī informed us; Ibn Makhlad informed us; Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī narrated to us; Khālid ibn al-Ḥabbāb narrated to us in Syria; Sulaymān al-Taymī narrated to us, from Abū ʿUthmān, from Abū Mūsā,
from the Prophet ﷺ who said: “Adam and Moses disputed, and Adam prevailed over Moses.” (4)
(1) Its chain of transmission is hasan (sound). Al-Tirmidhi also recorded it (no. 475, Book of Prayer, chapter: “What has been related concerning the Duha prayer”) through Abu Ja‘far al-Samnani, who said: Abu Mushir narrated to us with the same chain except that he mentioned both Abu al-Darda and Abu Dharr. Ahmad transmitted it as well, 6:440 and 451, through Abu al-Mughira and Abu al-Yaman, both from Safwan b. ‘Amr, from Shurayh b. ‘Ubayd, from Abu al-Darda: the Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: Son of Adam, do not neglect four rakas at the beginning of the day and I shall suffice you for the rest of it.” This chain is sahih (authentic). A parallel report from Na‘im b. Hammad appears in Ahmad 5:286-287, Abu Dawud (1289) and al-Darimi 1:338, all with an authentic chain. Ahmad also relates it, 4:153 and 201, through another route from Na‘im b. Hammad, from ‘Uqba b. ‘Amir al-Juhani; this chain is likewise authentic.
(2) It is found in the author’s Mishyakha, manuscript Kh, fol. 171.
(3) Referred to earlier on p. 84, no. 3, cited from the author’s Mishyakha.
(4) The report is also in Tarikh Baghdad 5:104. On Khalid b. al-Habbab see al-Jarh wa al-Ta‘dil 3:326. Ibn Abi Hatim relates that his father, when asked about him, said, “He is a Basran shaykh; his hadith is fit to be written down.”
