Shaybah’s paternal uncle; that occurred on the Day of the Conquest, and Shaybah was then still a disbeliever. ʿUthmān retained custody of the Kaʿbah until he died, after which the office passed to Shaybah.
I say: Al-Wāqidī’s statement, “ʿUthmān remained in sole charge of the House until his death,” is open to question. If he intended that ʿUthmān held the custodianship exclusively, we do not accept it. If he meant that ʿUthmān shared it with Shaybah, that is plausible, for Shaybah served as doorkeeper during the caliphate of ʿUmar. It is also possible that the Prophet ﷺ assigned the custodianship to Shaybah before he became Muslim; Shaybah embraced Islam later in the year of the Conquest, though not on its very day.
Muḥammad ibn Ḥamrān reported: Abū Bishr narrated to us, from Musāfiʿ ibn Shaybah, from his father, who said: The Prophet ﷺ entered the Kaʿbah to pray and found images inside. He said, “O Shaybah, remove these for me.” This weighed heavily upon him. Someone advised, “Coat them with clay, then smear them with saffron,” so he did. Muḥammad alone transmits this report, and he is of moderate reliability.
Yūnus narrated—from Nāfiʿ—from Ibn ʿUmar—that on the Day of the Conquest the Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached from the upper part of Mecca on his mount, with Usāmah riding behind him. Bilāl and ʿUthmān ibn Ṭalḥah, one of the custodians, accompanied him. He dismounted in the Mosque, ordered ʿUthmān to bring the key to the House, and the door was opened. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered with Usāmah, Bilāl, and ʿUthmān, remaining inside for a long part of the day. When he came out the people hurried to enter; ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar was the first to go in. He found Bilāl standing behind the door and asked, “Where did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray?” Bilāl pointed to the spot where he had prayed.
Ibn ʿUmar said, “I forgot to ask him how many units of prayer he performed.” Authentic. Al-Bukhārī cites it in suspended form as evidence.
Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn az-Zubayr told me, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Thawr, from Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah, who said: “When the Messenger…"
