119 – ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Wāṣil ibn ʿAbd al-Shakūr ibn Zayn al-Zaynī
He was an imām, a ḥadith master (ḥāfiẓ), a valiant champion and relentless attacker—Abū al-Faḍl al-Zaynī al-Bukhārī, the foremost traditionist of Bukhara in his day. He travelled widely and met the leading scholars.
He related ḥadith from Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī, ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Muṭahhir, al-Ḥasan ibn Sawwār al-Baghawī, ʿAbdān ibn ʿUthmān al-Marwazī, Musaddad ibn Musarhad, Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā, and others of their rank.
Those who transmitted from him include Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl (al-Bukhārī) outside the Ṣaḥīḥ, Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad Jazara, the scholars of Bukhara, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Bukhārī, the teacher.
His father (1) was himself a ḥadith scholar; he journeyed and met Ibn ʿUyaynah and Ibn Wahb, and his son ʿUbayd Allāh reported from him in great quantity.
Abū al-Faḍl al-Sulaymānī said, “Our shaykhs narrated from ʿUbayd Allāh, and al-Bukhārī used to boast of having met him; he encountered Sahl ibn Bakkār, Hilāl ibn Fayyāḍ, Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr, and many others whom he named.”
He was martyred—may Allah have mercy on him—in the battle of Khūkījah in Shawwāl 272 AH. Another report says he was killed in 277 AH, when he was in his early eighties.
