Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

That report was transmitted by men whose narrations are not to be rejected—ruined and disgraced are those who branded them liars.

Say as well: “The finest of people after Muhammad are his two long-standing deputies, then comes ʿUthmān, who holds the strongest claim.

Their fourth—the best of creation after them—is ʿAlī, ally of virtue, ever triumphant in goodness.

They are that company, without a shadow of doubt; on noble mounts in Paradise, radiant with light, they will roam.” (1)

Saʿīd, Saʿd, Ibn ʿAwf, Talḥah, ʿĀmir of the clan of Fihr, and the praised Zubayr—

Speak only the best about all the Companions; do not be one who reviles, finding fault and causing hurt.

The clear revelation has proclaimed their merit, and in the Sūrah of Victory are verses abundant in their praise.

Be certain of the pre-ordained decree, for it is a pillar of the religion’s structure, and through it the faith is broadened.

Do not—in ignorance—deny Nakīr and Munkar, nor the Basin or the Balance; this is sincere advice to you.

Say: “Through His bounty the Almighty will draw forth from the Fire bodies hurled there like charcoal.

They will be placed upon a river in Paradise and revived by its waters, like seeds borne by a swelling torrent when it overflows.” (2)

Indeed, the Messenger of Allah will intercede for creation; and declare that the torment of the grave is an established truth.

Do not deem the people of prayer unbelievers even when they sin, for everyone sins and the Lord of the Throne pardons.

= vol. 13, pp. 389–390, in Kitab al-Tawhid, chapter “They wish to alter the word of Allah” (Q 48:15); Muslim, no. 758, in “The Prayer of Travellers,” chapter “The merit of supplication and remembrance at the end of the night”; Abu Dawud, no. 1315; and al-Tirmidhi, no. 3498. (1) Tabaqat al-Hanabila reads wal-raht (and the party) instead of lil-raht (for the party), and fi al-khuld (in eternity) instead of bi-n-nur (in the light). (2) Tabaqat al-Hanabila also has ka-habbatin hamalahu al-sayl (like a seed carried by the flood-water). Al-Bukhari, 1/68, “Faith,” chapter “The varying ranks of the believers,” and Muslim, no. 184, “Faith,” chapter “Affirming intercession and the release of the monotheists from Hell,” transmit—on the authority of Abu Sa id al-Khudri—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The people of Paradise will enter Paradise, and the people of Hellfire will enter Hellfire. Then Allah will say: ‘Bring out of the Fire anyone who has in his heart the weight of a mustard-seed of faith.’ They will emerge blackened, be cast into the River of Life, and will sprout forth as a seed sprouts on the bank of a torrent. Have you not seen how it comes out yellow and twisted?” The term habbah (with i-vowel on the first consonant) is, according to Abu Hanifa al-Dinawari, a collective noun for the seeds of plants; its singular is likewise habbah (with a-vowel). By contrast, the word habb denotes wheat and barley, its singular also habbah; the two differ only in their plural forms.
