He then said, “Enter from the very pass Hassān described.”
Al-Zuhrī related—on the authority of Anas—that in the Year of the Conquest the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca wearing a miġfar (helmet). Once he removed it, a man came and said, “Here is Ibn Khatal, clinging to the curtains of the Kaʿbah.” He replied, “Kill him.” This report is agreed upon.
The Prophet ﷺ had already placed Ibn Khatal and three others under a sentence of death.
Manṣūr ibn Abī Muzāḥim reported: Abū Maʿshar told us, from Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb, from al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd, who said, “I saw the Prophet ﷺ have ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khatal executed on the day they dragged him from beneath the curtains; his neck was struck between Zamzam and the Maqām, after which he said, ‘No Qurayshī shall ever again be put to death while in captivity.’”
Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmmār al-Duhnī narrated—through Abū al-Zubayr—from Jābir that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Mecca on the day of the Conquest wearing a black turban and not in a state of iḥrām. Muslim recorded this.
In the Musnad of al-Ṭayālisī, Ḥammād ibn Salamah transmitted—through Abū al-Zubayr—from Jābir that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered on the day of the Conquest wearing a black turban.
Musāwar al-Warrāq said: “I heard Jaʿfar ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth relate from his father: ‘It is as though I can still see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day Mecca was conquered, wearing a black ḥaraqānī turban, one end of which hung between his shoulders.’” Muslim also recorded this report.
Ibn Isḥāq transmitted—through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr—that ʿĀʾishah said: “The Prophet’s banner on the day of the Conquest was white, while his standard was black; it had been cut from one of my marḥal-wool cloaks, and the standard was called al-ʿUqāb (the Eagle).”
