Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Manda narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn al-Nasāʾī narrated to me; my father narrated to me; Abū Dāwūd Sulaymān ibn al-Ashʿath related to us in Basra and said:

“Al-Zuhrī heard from thirteen men among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Anas, Sahl, al-Sāʾib, Sunayn Abū Jamīlah (1), Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ, a man from Baliyy, Ibn Abī Ṣuʿayr, and Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl.

They asked, ‘And Ibn ʿUmar?’

He replied, ‘I saw Ibn ʿUmar letting the water run over his face in a continuous stream (2).’

They also asked, ‘What about Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, who recalled the Prophet ﷺ on the day he passed away, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Azhar?’ (3)”

Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad (4), Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (5) and Muḥammad ibn Bayān—reading to me—reported; al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣabbāḥ reported to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rifāʿah reported to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan the judge reported to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar al-Naḥḥās said:

“Abū Saʿīd Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Aʿrābī narrated to us; Abū Dāwūd Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb and Musaddad narrated to us; they said: Ḥammād related to us, from Thābit, from Abū Burdah, from al-Aghar—who had been a Companion—who said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, ‘At times a veil is cast over my heart, yet I seek Allah’s forgiveness one hundred times each day.’ (6)"

(1) His biography is recorded in Ibn Hajar’s Al-Isaba, vol. 4, p. 33. (2) “Sanna al-maʾa ʿala wajhihi” means: he poured the water over his face. (3) The author notes that al-Zuhri heard from thirteen Companions of the Messenger of Allah, yet he actually lists only eleven names. (4) A reference to him has already appeared on p. 209, note 1, drawn from the author’s Mashaykha. (5) Al-Dhahabi includes his biography in his Mashaykha, folio 36. (6) The hadith is found in Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 1515 (Book of Prayer, chapter on seeking forgiveness), and in Sahih Muslim, no. 2702 (Book of Remembrance and Supplication, chapter on the desirability of abundant istighfar). Al-Khattabi explains that the word yughan means “it covers and overspreads my heart.” Its root is ghayn (a covering); anything that comes between you and something is a ghayn, hence a cloud (ghaym) is so called.
