Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

does not allow it to pass without comment; rather, he usually brands it as weak, although he may on occasion remain silent because the report is already well-known and its faultiness patently obvious. Allah knows best. (1)

Al-Ḥāfiẓ Zakariyyā al-Sājī said: “The Book of Allah is the foundation of Islam, and the book of Abū Dāwūd is the covenant of Islam.” (2)

I say: Alongside his mastery of ḥadīth and its many branches, Abū Dāwūd was counted among the foremost jurists; his compilation itself bears witness to that. He was one of the distinguished students of Imām Aḥmad, attending his gatherings for a considerable time and consulting him on the most intricate questions of subsidiary and foundational law. (3)

He held fast to the path of the early generations: adhering to the Sunnah, submitting to it, and refraining from

(1) Abu Dawud includes in his Sunan a number of reports transmitted by weak narrators and leaves them without comment, such as Ibn Lahi‘a, Salih mawla al-Tu’ama, ‘Abd Allah b. Muhammad b. ‘Aqil, Musa b. Wardan, Salama b. al-Fadl, and others. A hadith critic should not imitate this silence or rely on such narrations simply because Abu Dawud recorded them. Rather, he must ask whether the report is supported by a corroborating chain, or whether it is solitary (gharib) and should therefore be held in suspension—especially when it conflicts with the version of a more reliable transmitter, in which case it sinks to the level of munkar (rejected). Abu Dawud even cites transmitters far weaker than the foregoing—al-Harith b. Dihya, Sadaqa al-Daqiqi, ‘Amr b. Waqid al-‘Umari, Muhammad b. ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Baylmani, Abu Hayan al-Kalbi, Sulayman b. Arqam, Ishaq b. ‘Abd Allah b. Abi Furwa, and others whose reports the critics abandoned outright—as well as isnads that are interrupted, narrations from mudallis transmitters related only with the vague ‘an formula, and chains containing unnamed individuals. Consequently, one may not classify these reports as hasan merely because Abu Dawud was silent. His silence may mean that he has already discussed the narrator elsewhere in his book, or that the point escaped his notice, or that the transmitter’s extreme weakness and the consensus of the imams regarding his unreliability—such as Abu al-Huwairith and Yahya b. al-‘Ala’—made further remark unnecessary, or it may stem from differences among the recensions of the Sunan. Indeed, the recension transmitted by Abu al-Sahh b. al-‘Abd contains observations on certain narrators and isnads that are absent from the transmission of al-Lu’lu’i. Moreover, the scholar Muhammad b. Ibrahim al-Wazir al-Yamani (d. 840/1437) states in his Tanqih al-Anzar, 1/201, that al-Dhahabi refined the criteria of Abu Dawud in the biographical notice he devoted to him in Siyar a‘lam al-nubala’. Al-Wazir then reproduces al-Dhahabi’s comment in full, Tanqih al-Anzar, 1/216. (2) Ibn ‘Asakir, Ta’rikh Dimashq, MS: vol. 7, fol. 273a. (3) Those questions were later compiled into a separate work, now printed under the title Masa’il al-Imam Ahmad, related by Abu Dawud (Cairo, al-Manar Press, 1353/1934), with a preface by Shaykh Muhammad Rashid Rida.
