the book al-Sunan: in it I gathered four thousand eight hundred ḥadiths (1). I recorded what is authentic, and what closely approaches authenticity, and—so I claimed—four ḥadiths from among them would suffice a person for his religion:
- The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Actions are judged by intentions” (2).
- “Part of a person’s excellence in Islam is his leaving what does not concern him” (3).
- He said: “None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself” (4).
- “The lawful is clear …” — the remainder of the ḥadith (5).
Al-Khaṭīb related this report: Abu Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm al-Qārī al-Dīnawarī told me, using these very words: “I heard Abū ’l-Ḥusayn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥasan al-Faradī say that he heard it from Ibn Dāsah” (6).
His statement that “this is sufficient for a person’s religion” is untenable; rather, a Muslim needs a large number of sound sunnahs in addition to the Qur’an.
