The Imām, the ḥadīth scholar, Shaykh al-Islām, Abū Muḥammad al-Baghdādī the gold-smith, one of the distinguished authorities.
Born: sometime before 190 AH.
He studied with Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Marrūdhī, Abū Nuʿaym, Qabīṣah ibn ʿUqbah, ʿAffān ibn Muslim, Abū Ghassān al-Nahdī, Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr, Surayj ibn al-Nuʿmān, and others of their rank.
Those who transmitted from him include: Mūsā ibn Hārūn, Ibn Ṣāʿid, Abū Jaʿfar ibn al-Bakhtarī, Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār, Abū Bakr al-Najjād, ʿUthmān ibn al-Sammāk, Ibn Najīḥ, Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī, Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Anbārī, and many others.
Al-Khaṭīb said, “He was ascetic, trustworthy, truthful, precise, and exact.” (1)
Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Munādī said, “He possessed virtue, devotion, and renunciation. A great many people benefited from him in ḥadīth, and they reported abundantly from him because of his reliability and uprightness. He passed away on the eleventh of Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 279 AH, having reached ninety years of age, save for a few months.”
I say: His narrations appear with a high chain of transmission in al-Ghaylāniyyāt.
