Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

89 – “As-Sāʾigh” Abū Muḥammad al-Qāsim ibn al-Ḥasan al-Hamdānī
A distinguished, reliable scholar—Abū Muḥammad al-Qāsim ibn al-Ḥasan al-Hamdānī al-Baghdādī, a theologian better known as “the Goldsmith.”
He heard ḥadith from Yazīd ibn Hārūn and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bakr al-Sahmī.
Among those who transmitted from him are Ibn Mujāhid, al-Haytham al-Shāshī, ʿAlī ibn Isḥāq al-Mādarāʾī, and others.
Al-Khaṭīb (1) declared him trustworthy.
He died in Egypt in the year 272 AH (2).
I do not know him.

90 – Al-Qazwīnī, Kathīr ibn Shihāb al-Qazwīnī
One of the ḥadith scholars.
He related ḥadith from Muḥammad ibn Sābiq al-Qazwīnī and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Jarrāḥ.
Those who narrated from him include Muḥammad ibn Makhlad, Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār, Abū Jaʿfar ibn al-Bakhtarī, and Abū al-Ḥasan al-Qaṭṭān.

(2) Tarikh Baghdad states: “He died in the year 272 AH on the eastern side of the city, in the street of Bab al-Khurasan, opposite the residence of the Banu Ishkab. Ibn Qaniʿ maintained that he passed away in Egypt.” It seems probable that al-Dhahabi’s remark, “I do not know him,” refers to the uncertainty about his death in Egypt rather than to any ignorance of the narrator himself, for al-Dhahabi had already described him as trustworthy at the start of the entry and reproduced al-Khatib’s endorsement.
