Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥākim said, “In their eyes he is not reliable.”
Al-Dāraquṭnī said, “Weak,” and on another occasion, “He is not strong.”
62 – al-Khaṣṣāf, Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAmr al-Shaybānī *
The erudite scholar, senior authority of the Ḥanafīs—Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAmr ibn Muhayr al-Shaybānī—was a jurist, Ḥanafī scholar, and traditionist.
He related hadith from Wahb ibn Jarīr, Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī, al-Wāqidī, Abū Nuʿaym, ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim, ʿĀrim, Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm, al-Qaʿnabī, and many others.
Ibn al-Najjār mentions him in his History.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Nadīm (1) said, “He was virtuous, devout, an expert in the laws of inheritance (farāʾiḍ), skilled in calculation, well-versed in juristic opinion (raʾy), and highly esteemed by the caliph al-Muhtadī Billāh—so much so that people remarked, ‘Here he is, reviving the administration of Aḥmad ibn Abī Dāwūd (2) and advancing the Jahmiyya (3).’”
He composed for al-Muhtadī a treatise entitled al-Kharāj (Land Tax). When the caliph was killed, al-Khaṣṣāf’s house was plundered and some of his books were lost.
