so he said, “My good woman, I have already answered you. I am no ruler able to enforce the matter, no judge empowered to decide it, and no husband whose duty is to please you. Go on your way.” (1)
Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Ẓāhirī related to us, through Ibn al-Najjār, who said:
Wahb ibn Jāmiʿ ibn Wahb al-ʿAṭṭār al-Ṣaydalānī, a close companion of Muḥammad ibn Dāwūd, loved him passionately and was utterly enamoured of him until he died from that love. It was for his sake that he composed the book al-Zahra.
Among those who transmitted from Ibn Dāwūd was Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Barbarī, and his son Qāsim narrated from him.
Aḥmad ibn Salāmah (2) informed us, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Taymī; ʿAbd al-Ghaffār ibn Muḥammad al-Naysābūrī informed us; ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Shīrāzī, the ḥadīth master, informed us in the year 447 AH at Dāmghān (3). He said: My grandfather Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Ẓāhirī told us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Manṣūrī the judge told us; al-Qāsim ibn Wahb al-Dāwūdī informed us; Wahb ibn Jāmiʿ al-ʿAṭṭār told me; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Dāwūd ibn ʿAlī told us; Abū Saʿīd al-Baṣrī told us; Muʿādh ibn Hishām told us; my father told us, from Qatādah, from Abū Ḥarb ibn Abī al-Aswad, from ʿAlī:
that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said concerning a nursing infant, “The urine of a baby boy is to be sprinkled, whereas the urine of a baby girl is to be washed.” (4)
