and the house of Ḥakīm was in the lower part of Mecca.

The Prophet ﷺ mounted ʿAbbās on his white mule—the one Dihyah al-Kalbī had given him—and ʿAbbās set off with Abū Sufyān riding pillion. The Prophet ﷺ then dispatched a messenger after them, saying, “Catch up with ʿAbbās and bring him back to me.”

When the envoy explained what the Prophet feared on Abū Sufyān’s account, he overtook them. ʿAbbās disliked the idea of turning back and said, “Messenger of Allah, do you fear that Abū Sufyān might return hoping to find only a few men with you, and so relapse into disbelief after accepting Islam?” The Prophet replied, “Keep him here,” and the envoy detained him. Abū Sufyān protested, “Is this treachery, O sons of Hāshim?” ʿAbbās answered, “We are no traitors, but I have a matter to discuss with you.”

Abū Sufyān asked, “What is it, so that I may grant it?” ʿAbbās said, “It will come to pass only after Khalid ibn al-Walid and al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām have marched in front of you to the Messenger of Allah.” So ʿAbbās halted him at the narrow defile below the arak trees, and Abū Sufyān kept his words in mind.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ now sent the cavalry in successive detachments, dividing them into two wings. He dispatched al-Zubayr with a large cavalry force; as they filed past, Abū Sufyān asked ʿAbbās, “Who is this?” He replied, “Al-Zubayr.” They were followed by Khalid ibn al-Walid with the contingents of Aslam, Ghifār, and Quḍāʿa. Abū Sufyān said, “Is that the Messenger of Allah, ʿAbbās?” He answered, “No; that is Khalid ibn al-Walid.”

Next the Prophet ﷺ sent Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah ahead of him at the head of an Anṣār battalion. Saʿd declared, “Today is the day of carnage; today the Sanctuary is laid bare.” The Prophet ﷺ himself advanced in the Battalion of Faith, composed of the Emigrants and the Helpers.

When Abū Sufyān saw many unfamiliar faces he said, “Messenger of Allah, have you preferred these people to your own kinsfolk?” He replied, “You and your people brought this about. These men believed me when you denied me, and they supported me when you drove me out.”

That day the Prophet ﷺ was accompanied by al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis, ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās, and ʿUyaynah ibn Badr. When Abū Sufyān saw them surrounding the Prophet ﷺ he asked, “Who are these, ʿAbbās?” He replied, “This is the Prophet’s own battalion; with it comes the red death. They are the Emigrants and the Helpers.” He said:

في أسفل مكة. وحمل النبي ﷺ العباس على بغلته البيضاء التى أهداها إليه دحية الكلبي، فانطلق العباس وأبو سفيان قد أردفه. ثم بعث النبي ﷺ في إثره، فقال: "أدركوا العباس فردوه علي". وحدثهم بالذي خاف عليه، فأدركه الرسول، فكره عباس الرجوع، وقال: أترهب يا رسول الله أن يرجع أبو سفيان راغبا في قلة الناس فيكفر بعد إسلامه؟ فقال: "احبسه" فحبسه. فقال أبو سفيان: غدرا يا بني هاشم؟ فقال عباس: إنا لسنا بغدر، ولكن لي إليك بعض الحاجة. قال: وما هي، فأقضيها لك؟ قال: إنما نفاذها حين تقدم عليك خالد بن الوليد والزبير بن العوام. فوقف عباس بالمضيق دون الأراك، وقد وعى منه أبو سفيان حديثه. ثم بعث رسول الله ﷺ الخيل بعضها على إثر بعض، وقسم الخيل شطرين، فبعث الزبير في خيل عظيمة. فلما مروا بأبي سفيان قال للعباس: من هذا؟ قال: الزبير. وردفه خالد بن الوليد بالجيش من أسلم وغفار وقضاعة، فقال أبو سفيان: أهذا رسول الله ﷺ يا عباس؟ قال: لا، ولكن هذا خالد بن الوليد. وبعث رسول الله ﷺ سعد بن عبادة بين يديه في كتيبة الأنصار، فقال: اليوم يوم الملحمة، اليوم تستحل الحرمة. ثم دخل رسول الله ﷺ في كتيبة الإيمان من المهاجرين والأنصار. فلما رأى أبو سفيان وجوها كثيرة لا يعرفها قال: يا رسول الله، اخترت هذه الوجوه على قومك؟ قال: "أنت فعلت ذلك وقومك. إن هؤلاء صدقوني إذ كذبتموني، ونصروني، إذ أخرجتموني"، ومع النبي ﷺ يومئذ الأقرع بن حابس، وعباس بن مرداس، وعيينة بن بدر، فلما أبصرهم حول النبي ﷺ قال: من هؤلاء يا عباس؟ قال: هذه كتيبة النبي ﷺ، ومع هذه الموت الأحمر، هؤلاء المهاجرون والأنصار. قال:
