hasten their reckoning.’
They will then be called forward and accounted for: some will enter Paradise by Allah’s mercy, and others will enter Paradise through my intercession. I shall go on interceding until I am handed a writ for men who had already been dispatched to the Fire, so much so that Mālik, the keeper of Hell, will say, ‘O Muhammad! You have left nothing for the Fire, and nothing of your Lord’s anger to be taken out upon your community!’
This is a singular, denounced hadith; it is transmitted solely by Muḥammad ibn Thābit (1), one of the weak narrators. Al-Bukhārī said, ‘He is questionable,’ and Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn said, ‘He is nothing.’ Al-Tirmidhī alone recorded it.
Abū al-Faḍl Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥusayn informed us; ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Abī Saʿd related to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Ṣāʿidī related to us; ʿUthmān ibn Muḥammad transmitted to us.
Abū al-Faḍl also transmitted, from al-Qāsim ibn Abī Saʿd; Hibat al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid related to us; ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us; they said:
Abū Nuʿaym ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Ḥasan informed us; Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq the ḥāfiẓ related to us; Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī related to us; ʿAmr ibn Marzūq related to us—and with the same chain to Yaʿqūb, he said:
Ibrāhīm ibn Marzūq also related to us; ʿUmar ibn Yūnus related to us; they said:
ʿIkrimah ibn ʿAmmār informed us; Shaddād related to us; he said: I heard Abū Umāmah (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘O son of Adam! Giving away your surplus is better for you, while withholding it is worse for you. You will not be blamed for keeping what suffices you. Begin with those you are responsible for, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand.’ (2)
