and others besides him, yet my eyes have never seen anyone comparable to Abū Zurʿah.
He went on: “I once visited al-Rabīʿ in Egypt. He asked, ‘Where are you from?’
‘I am from Rayy,’ I replied.
He said, ‘You left Abū Zurʿah and came here? Abū Zurʿah is a sign of Allah. When Allah makes a person a sign, He sets him apart from his peers so that he has no equal.’ (1)
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: I heard Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā say, “I have never seen anyone more humble than Abū Zurʿah; he and Abū Ḥātim are the two imams of Khurāsān.” (2)
Yūsuf al-Mayānajī (3) related: I heard the judge ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Qazwīnī say, “One day Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us, saying, ‘Abū Zurʿah told me…’
Someone asked, ‘Who is that?’
He replied, ‘Abū Zurʿah is more famous in this world than the world itself.’”
Ibn Abī Ḥātim: Ḥasan ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; I heard Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal praying to Allah on behalf of Abū Zurʿah. (4)
And I heard ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ghiyāth say, “Abū Zurʿah never saw anyone the equal of himself.”
Saʿīd ibn ʿAmr al-Barḏaʿī stated: I heard Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā say,
“The Muslims will remain in a good state so long as Allah leaves among them someone like Abū Zurʿah to teach the people. Allah would never leave the earth without having in it someone like Abū Zurʿah who teaches people what they do not know.”
Ibn Abī Ḥātim recorded this statement from Saʿīd. (5)
