so I responded to him.
Then he said, “Ibn Abī Ghaniyah narrated to us, from his father, from Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm, from Nāfiʿ ibn Jubayr, who said:
‘There is no alliance pact in Islam.’
I replied, ‘This is a mistake; Isḥāq ibn Sulaymān erred in it. The correct chain is: Saʿd, from his father, from Jubayr.’ (1)
He asked, ‘Who says this?’
I answered, ‘Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Ibn Abī Ghaniyah informed us.’ (2)
He became angry (3) and then said to me, ‘What do you say about someone who makes the adhān serve as the iqāmah?’
I said, ‘He must repeat it.’
He asked, ‘Who holds this opinion?’
I said, ‘Al-Shaʿbī.’
He asked, ‘On whose authority from al-Shaʿbī?’
I said, ‘Qabīṣah narrated to us, from Sufyān, from Jābir, from al-Shaʿbī.’
He said, ‘And who else besides this?’
I said, ‘Ibrāhīm (4); and Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us: Manṣūr ibn Abī al-Aswad narrated, from Mughīrah, from him.’
He said, ‘You have erred.’
I said:
According to al-Mustamli: “This hadith is not from Asim ibn Umar; rather, it was narrated by Muhammad ibn Ibrahim. When this was pointed out to him, he went back to Muhammad ibn Ibrahim.”
There is also a version on the authority of Abu Hurayra reported by Malik 1/235; al-Bukhari 3/98; Muslim (2632); and al-Tirmidhi (1060). Al-Tirmidhi adds: “There are similar reports from Umar, Muadh, Kab ibn Malik, Utba ibn Abd, Umm Sulaym, Jabir, Anas, Abu Dharr, Ibn Masud, Abu Thalaba al-Ashjai, Ibn Abbas, Uqba ibn Amir, Abu Said, and Qurra ibn Iyas al-Muzani.” For a full listing see Umdat al-Qari by al-Ayni 4/30 ff., Book of Funerals, chapter ‘The merit of the one whose child dies and he seeks the reward.’
(1) The same wording is found in Ahmad 4/83, Muslim (2530), and Abu Dawud (2925) through the chains of Ibn Numayr and Abu Usama, both from Zakariya, from Sad ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Jubayr ibn Mutim: the Messenger of Allah said, “There is no hilf (formal alliance) in Islam; any hilf that existed in the Jahiliyya (pre-Islamic period) is only reinforced by Islam.” Ibn al-Athir comments: “Hilf originally denotes a covenant or treaty of mutual support and assistance. The alliances of Jahiliyya that fomented tribal warfare and raids are what the Prophet forbade by saying, ‘There is no hilf in Islam.’ But those pacts established to aid the oppressed and maintain kinship ties—such as the Pact of al-Mutayyibin—are what he meant when he said, ‘Any hilf from Jahiliyya has been strengthened only further by Islam.’”
(2) Tarikh Baghdad 10/330; the additional wording is taken from this source.
(3) Tarikh Baghdad adds the following here: “from his father, from Sad ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Hubayr, who said: he became angry …”.
(4) It further adds: “He said, ‘From whom—about Ibrahim?’ I replied, ‘He narrated to us …’.”
