‘A contingent of my community will never cease to stand visibly upon the religion, held in honor, until the Day of Resurrection.’ (1)
In Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (2) it is reported that Abū Dāwūd narrated from al-ʿAṭāridī. That report, however, is not sound; it comes from the additional material inserted by Abū Saʿīd ibn al-Aʿrābī in the name of al-ʿAṭāridī.
44 – al-Jawharī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf
The imām, ḥāfiẓ, ascetic, and godly scholar: Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Baghdādī, known as al-Jawharī, the companion of Bishr al-Ḥāfī (3).
(1) A number of hadith scholars differed with Abu Muawiyah and transmitted the report through al-Mughira b. Shuʿba, not through Saʿd. Al-Bukhari recorded it: 13/249 in al-Iʿtisam, chapter “The Prophet said: A group of my community will always be manifest upon the truth—they are the people of knowledge,” through the chain of ʿUbayd Allah b. Musa; 13/372 in Kitab al-Tawhid, chapter on the verse “Our command, when We intend a thing…” (Q 16:40), through Ibrahim b. Humayd; and 6/464 in al-Anbiya, chapter “The polytheists asked the Prophet to show them a sign,” through Yahya b. Saʿid al-Qattan. All three versions read: Ismaʿil b. Abi Khalid → Qays b. Abi Hazim → al-Mughira b. Shuʿba.
Muslim includes it in his Sahih (no. 1921), Kitab al-Imara, chapter “The Prophet said: A group of my community…”, on the authority of Wakiʿ, ʿAbdah, Marwan al-Fazari, and Abu Usama, all narrating from Ismaʿil b. Abi Khalid → Qays → al-Mughira. Al-Harawi states in Dhamm al-Kalam—quoted by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari, 13/249—after citing Abu Muawiyah’s version from Saʿd: “The correct variant is that of the majority, from al-Mughira.” Muslim does report a wording from Saʿd (no. 1925) through Abu ʿUthman: “The people of the West will remain manifest upon the truth until the Hour is established.” Ibn al-Athir explains that “people of the West” (ahl al-gharb) may denote the people of Syria, because it lies west of the Hijaz; others say gharb here means “sharpness and strength,” i.e., the combatants; while Ibn al-Madini holds that gharb refers to a pulley-bucket, symbolically designating the Arabs, its customary users.
