Muḥammad ibn ʿUmayr ibn ʿUtārid al-Tamīmī, known as al-ʿAṭāridī, the Kufan. He was born in 177 AH and, through his father’s care, began attending ḥadith gatherings at a very early age.
He narrated from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr, Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, Yūnus ibn Bukayr, Wakīʿ ibn al-Jarrāḥ, Ibn Fuḍayl, and a number of others.
He also transmitted the work al-Maghāzī of Ibn Isḥāq through the recension of Yūnus ibn Bukayr.
Those who received ḥadith from him include Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāʿid, Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd, Riḍwān al-Ṣaydalanī, the judge al-Maḥāmilī, Abū Sahl ibn Ziyād, Abū Saʿīd ibn al-Aʿrābī, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm, ʿUthmān ibn Aḥmad al-Sammāk, Maymūn ibn Isḥāq, Abū Jaʿfar ibn Burayd al-Hāshimī, Ḥamzah ibn Muḥammad al-ʿUqbī, Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā al-Adamī, and many others besides.
Ibn ʿAdī said: “I found the scholars unanimous in judging him weak, yet I have not come across any hadith of his that is repudiated; they weakened him only on the grounds that he had not actually met those authorities.” (1)
I say: He did meet them while still in his early teens, and al-Aṣamm said, “I heard Abū ʿUbaydah al-Sarī ibn Yaḥyā—my father asked him about al-ʿAṭāridī—and he deemed him reliable.” (2)
Abū Kuraib stated that he had indeed heard from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh.
Al-Daraqutnī said: “There is nothing objectionable about him; Abū Kuraib praised him.”
Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Ḥumayd ibn al-Rabīʿ narrated from his father, who said: “Abū …”
