42 – Ibn Sumayʿ, Abū al-Qāsim Maḥmūd ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dimashqī *
The Imām, ḥāfiẓ, and meticulous scholar, Abū al-Qāsim Maḥmūd ibn Ibrāhīm, son of the muḥaddith Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā ibn Sumayʿ al-Dimashqī, author of the book al-Ṭabaqāt.
He received ḥadith from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Uways, Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bukayr, Abū Jaʿfar al-Nufaylī, Ṣafwān ibn Ṣāliḥ, and others of their generation.
Transmitters from him include Abū Ḥātim, Abū Zurʿah al-Dimashqī, Ibn Jawṣā, and several others.
Abū Ḥātim said, “He is truthful; I have never seen anyone in Damascus more astute than he.” (1)
ʿAmr ibn Duḥaym said, “He died in Damascus in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 259 AH.” (2)
I say: He passed away in the prime of his life—may Allah have mercy on him.
