Thereafter Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb quoted a ḥadith in his book al-Sābiq wa al-Lāḥiq (1) through the Isnād of Ibn Fahm, who said: “Muḥammad ibn Saʿd narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Anas informed us; Abū Ḥafṣ al-Fallās informed us,” and he mentioned the report in full.
Al-Khaṭīb remarked, “He is reliable.” (2)
Ibn Makhlad said: “He died in Shawwāl of the year 264 AH.”
41 – al-Jurjānī, Abū Isḥāq Ismāʿīl ibn Zayd *
The Imām, the roving scholar, Abū Isḥāq Ismāʿīl ibn Zayd al-Jurjānī, a ḥāfiẓ, though not widely known because of the early date (3) of his passing.
He heard ḥadith from Aḥmad ibn Yūnus, Yūsuf ibn ʿAdī, al-Shādhakūnī, and he obtained the books of al-Shāfiʿī through Harmalah.
Abū Aḥmad ibn ʿAdī said: “This Ismāʿīl used to write ninety (4) folios in a single night, in an exceptionally fine script.”
I say: “At that pace he could have copied Sahih Muslim in a week.”
