Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

of his age—Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq ibn al-Ḥuṣayn ibn Jābir al-Sulamī, al-Bukhārī, al-Surmārī.⦗1⦘

In his early years, and with his father’s special care, he heard hadith from Ashhal ibn Ḥātim, Abū ʿĀṣim, ʿUbayd Allāh, Makkī ibn Ibrāhīm, and al-Muqriʾ.

Those who later related from him include Ṣāliḥ Jazara, ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn Bujayr, and others.

He used to recount: “Al-Muqriʾ was once asked, and someone said to him, ‘There is a man in Bukhārā called Aḥmad ibn Ḥafṣ who maintains that faith is merely a statement.’ Al-Muqriʾ replied, ‘He is a Murjiʾ.’

I was standing right before him and said, ‘I hold that view as well.’ He grabbed my head, butted me once with his own, and said, ‘You are a Murjiʾ too, O Khurasānī!⦗2⦘’”

He died in 276 AH.

(1) Al-Sarmari – with a damma on the s and a sukun on the r – is a nisba to the village of Sarmara in the region of Bukhara (see: al-Lubab). (2) The designation *irja* (postponement) is sometimes applied by the Muʿtazila to Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamaʿa, because Sunnis do not definitively condemn grave sinners to everlasting Hell; rather, they leave their fate to God, Who may punish them or forgive them. Hadith scholars also extend the term to those who hold that deeds are not part of faith and that faith neither increases nor decreases— the view of Abu Hanifa and his school—whereas they themselves maintain that deeds belong to the very definition of faith and that faith can rise and fall. A third use of the term targets those who define faith as mere knowledge of God and regard acts of obedience beyond that, or sins short of disbelief, as neither harmful nor beneficial. Only this last variety of *irja* is censured and casts doubt on its proponent’s religious reliability. The author states in his Mizān, 4/99: “Musʿar b. Kidām is a trustworthy imam; al-Sulaymani’s remark that Musʿar, Hammad b. Abi Sulayman, al-Nuʿman, ʿAmr b. Murra, ʿAbd al-ʿAziz b. Abi Rawwād, Abu Muʿawiya, ʿAmr b. Dharr… and others were Murjiʾa is of no consequence.” I add: *Irja* was espoused by a number of eminent scholars and one should not malign someone merely for holding this position.
