ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim, who declared him trustworthy (ṣadūq); likewise ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Kās al-Qāḍī, Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad al-Ṣaffār, ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Zubayr al-Qurashī, and others.
He counted a little over twenty teachers from Kūfah.
Through his transmission we have heard the book al-Kharāj by Yaḥyā ibn Ādam (1), and we have also obtained a fascicle of his own narrations that was transmitted exclusively by Ibn al-Lattī.
As for the remark of the ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir in Shuyūkh al-Nabal (2) that Abū Dāwūd narrated from this man, it is an old misunderstanding, for the wording found in the ancient manuscripts of the Sunan is:
“Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī informed us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn and Abū ʿĀṣim informed us, from Abū al-Ashhab, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿArfajah, that his nose was injured on the Day of Kilāb.”
Ibn Dāsa alone transmitted the report with the wording: “ʿAl-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAffān narrated to us.”
There is no question that untangling an issue like this is difficult, yet I am certain that the phrase “ibn ʿAffān” is an interpolation inserted by Ibn Dāsa himself. A number of authorities differ with him and omit that addition. We know of no narration in which Abū Dāwūd reports from Ibn ʿAffān, nor do we know that Ibn ʿAffān ever travelled to Yazīd or to Abū ʿĀṣim. The narrator intended is in fact al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥulwānī, the well-traveled ḥāfiẓ.
