and my uncle, Abū Bakr Muḥammad, narrated to us; ʿĀṣim ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us; they said:
ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Hāniʾ narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to me; Muʿāwiyah narrated from Abū Maryam, from Abū Hurayrah, who heard him say:
‘When one of you meets his brother, let him greet him with peace. If a tree, a wall, or a rock comes between them, and he meets him again, then let him greet him with peace once more.’ (1)
With this same chain he also said: Muʿāwiyah narrated to me from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Bukht, from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ conveying the same teaching.
Muʿāwiyah is Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ; he is reliable.
(1) ‘Abd Allah ibn Salih is considered weak, while the remaining transmitters are reliable.
Al-Bukhari also cited the hadith in al-Adab al-Mufrad, no. 1010, through the route of ‘Abd Allah ibn Salih with this chain.
Abu Dawud recorded it (no. 5200) via Ahmad ibn Saʿid al-Hamadhani, from Ibn Wahb, from Muʿawiyah ibn Salih, from Abu Musa, from Abu Maryam, from Abu Hurayrah; Abu Musa here is unknown.
A second, marfuʿ version has a sound chain; Abu Dawud likewise transmitted it (no. 5200) through Muʿawiyah, from ʿAbd al-Wahhab ibn Bakht, from Abu al-Zinad.
Abu Yaʿla (ms. fol. 1297) also reported it through ‘Abd Allah ibn Salih, from Muʿawiyah, from ʿAbd al-Wahhab ibn Bakht with this same isnad.
Al-Bukhari related another wording in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 101?) through Musa ibn Ismaʿil, from al-Dahhak ibn Nibras, from Thabit al-Bunani, from Anas ibn Malik: the Companions of the Prophet would be sitting together; when a tree came between them, one group would pass to its right and another to its left, and when they met again they would exchange greetings of peace.
Al-Dahhak ibn Nibras is considered soft (lenient) in hadith, yet Ibn al-Sunni narrated the report (no. 241) through another path: from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Thabit and Humayd, from Anas, who said: “When we were with the Messenger of Allah and a tree separated us, once we met again we would greet one another with peace.” Its chain is sound.
Al-Haythami cited the report in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid, 8/34, attributing it to al-Tabarani in al-Awsat, and deemed its chain good.
