Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He heard (i.e., took ḥadith from): Zayd ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿUbayd al-Dimashqī, Abū ʿĀṣim al-Nabīl, Marwān ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭāṭarī, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ, Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī, ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Mushir, Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī, Abū al-Mughīra, Rawwād (1) ibn al-Jarrāḥ, Muḥammad ibn Kathīr al-Miṣṣīṣī (2), Yaḥyā ibn Yaʿlā, and Yasara ibn Ṣafwān.

Narrators who reported from him include: Ibn Mājah, Abū al-ʿAbbās ibn Surayj, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj, Abū Bakr ibn Mujāhid, Abū Bakr al-Kharāʾiṭī, Abū ʿAwānah al-Isfarāyinī, the judge al-Maḥāmilī, Ismāʿīl al-Ṣaffār, and others besides.

Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb said, “He was trustworthy, righteous, and devout.”

Muḥammad ibn Makhlad remarked, “I never saw him laugh, nor even smile.” (3)

Al-Dāraqutnī likewise declared him reliable.

He left behind a well-known fascicle.

He passed away at the close of the year 267 AH, at over eighty years of age—may Allah Almighty have mercy on him.

(1) The original text reads: “wa Aba al-Mughira Warad,” which is incorrect. Abū al-Mughira is ʿAbd al-Quddus ibn al-Hajjaj al-Khawlāni al-Himsi, whereas Rawād ibn al-Jarrah’s kunyah is Abū ʿIsam, as stated in the biographical dictionaries. The author will cite him by this kunyah in the isnad of the next hadith. (2) The nisbah al-Masisi is vocalized in al-Ansab with a kasrah on the initial mīm and a doubled, kasrah-marked ṣād. Ibn al-Athir in al-Lubab and al-Suyuti in Lubb al-Lubab keep the same vocalization. Al-Bakri, in Muʿjam ma Ustaʿjam, 4/1235, does likewise and quotes al-Asmaʿi: “Do not say Maṣīṣa with an initial fatḥah.” Yaqut, however, writes it with fatḥ on the mīm, while al-Jawhari gives it fatḥ on the mīm and a single (light) ṣād, like safinah; this is followed by the author of al-Qamus.
