At the close of this volume—the eighth—the following notice appears:
“The eighth volume of Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ has now been completed. It is the work of the shaykh, imām, scholar-practitioner, authoritative and discerning critic, master of many sciences, and historian of Islam, Shams al-Dīn Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿUthmān al-Dhahabī—may Allah prolong his life.
This is the first copy to be transcribed from the author’s own manuscript, and it has been collated with the original as far as possible. All praise and favor belong to Allah, and with Him is success and protection.
The next volume—the ninth—opens with the biography of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rūḥ al-Madaʾinī.
The writing of this copy was finished on Monday night, the fifth of the blessed month of Ramadan in the year 740 AH.
May Allah grant it a good conclusion. All praise is due to Allah alone, and may blessings and abundant peace be upon our master Muḥammad, his family, and his Companions.”
