Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He passed away in Mecca, in Jumada I, 279 AH. (1)

253 – Al-Yasaʿ ibn Zayd ibn Sahl, Abū Naṣr al-Zaynabī al-Makkī *

This shaykh, a centenarian, Abū Naṣr al-Zaynabī of Mecca, was the last man who claimed to have met Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna.

He transmitted hadith from Sufyān and from Hawdhah ibn Khalīfah.

Among those who narrated from him are ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Kaʿbī, Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Jurjānī, and others.

Ibn Mākūlā mentioned him, saying, “He reports from Ibn ʿUyayna and Hawdhah.” (2)

Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim said, “I neither know him to be reliable nor have I found a criticism against him. He narrated in Mecca in the year 282 AH.”

I (al-Dhahabī) say: He lived past a hundred. From Ibn ʿUyayna he transmitted a fabricated report—found in Abū al-Asʿad al-Qushayrī’s al-Arbaʿīn—on the authority of Ḥumayd from Anas, a statement Sufyān never uttered.

(1) Ibn Abi Hatim says in al-Jarh wa al-Tadil, 5/6: “I wrote down hadith from him in Mecca, and he is unquestionably truthful.” Imam al-Fasi adds in al-‘Aqd al-Thamin, 5/99: “Ibn Hibban listed him in al-Thiqat. Al-Fakihi remarks in al-Awaliyat bi Makkah: ‘He was the first of the Meccans to give formal legal opinions; when he was about twenty-four years old Abu Yahya Ibn Abi Masrah was already the jurist of Mecca, and he remains so to this day.’” (*) Further references: al-Ansab, 6/347; al-‘Aqd al-Thamin, 7/469; al-Ikmal, 4/202.
