ʿAbd al-Walī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Khaṭīb and ʿĪsā ibn Barakah the schoolmaster, together with a number of others, reported to us; they said:
“ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar informed us; Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Bannāʾ narrated to us in person; Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Zaynabī related to us; Abū Bakr ibn ʿUmar told us; Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣāʿid reported to us; Abū al-Ashʿath narrated; Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated; Rawḥ narrated from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in a prayer in which he either added to it or left something out. When he finished we said, “Messenger of Allah, has something new occurred in the prayer?” He then bent his leg and performed two prostrations of forgetfulness.’ (1)
Via this same chain Ibn Ṣāʿid said—and Abū Bakr al-Athram added for us, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn al-Minhāl from Yazīd—concerning this ḥadīth: ‘We said, “You prayed such-and-such …,”’ and he mentioned the remainder of the report.
This is among the loftiest isnāds we possess from al-Athram.

I read to the shaykh Wahbān ibn ʿAlī al-Jazarī, the muezzin (2): ‘ʿAbd … has narrated to you.’
(1) Chain of transmission: sound. Abu al-Ashʿath is Ahmad b. al-Miqdam b. Sulayman al-ʿAjli, one of al-Bukhari’s narrators. The hadith is also reported by: Ahmad, Musnad, 1:379, 455; al-Bukhari, Sahih, 1:422, Book of Prayer, “Facing the qibla wherever one is”; Muslim, Sahih, no. 572, Book of Mosques, “Unintentional mistakes in prayer and the prostration for them”; Abu Dawud, no. 1020; Ibn Abi Shayba, 2:25; Ibn al-Jarud, no. 244; al-Tayalisi, 1:110; and al-Bayhaqi, 2:330, 335. The chain runs: Mansur b. al-Muʿtamir—from Ibrahim al-Nakhai—from ʿAlqama, who said: ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿud narrated that the Prophet ﷺ prayed—(Ibrahim said: I do not know whether he added to or shortened the prayer)—and when he gave the salutation it was said to him: “Messenger of Allah, has something new occurred in the prayer?” He replied, “What is that?” They said, “You prayed such-and-such.” He then folded his leg, faced the qibla, performed two prostrations, and gave the salutation. When he turned to us he said, “Had anything new been prescribed in the prayer I would have informed you of it. I am only a human being like you; I forget as you forget. So, when I forget, remind me. If any of you is uncertain about his prayer, let him pursue what he judges correct, complete it on that basis, then give the salutation and perform two prostrations.”
(2) Wahban b. ʿAli b. Mahfuz, known as Abu ʿAli and Abu l-Karam al-Jazari, is the narrator in question.
