I add: he lived for seventy years, and he died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year 268 AH.
235 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥammād ibn Ayyūb al-Āmulī * (kh)
The Imām, ḥāfiẓ, accomplished scholar, and reliable authority; Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Āmulī. Āmul Jayḥūn is a small town belonging to the districts of Marw. It is also called Amaw, and for that reason he was nicknamed al-Amawī—with two fatḥahs.
He heard ḥadith from al-Qaʿnabī, Abū al-Yamān, Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb, Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, Yaḥyā al-Wuḥāẓī, Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, and Abū al-Jamāhir al-Kafrasūsī.
Among those who transmitted from him—so it is said—was al-Bukhārī, for he once stated: “ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us.” In my judgment, however, that ʿAbd Allāh is Ibn Abī al-Khuwārazmī, for al-Bukhārī stayed with him in Khwārazm, examined his books, and took a number of traditions from him.
Those who definitely narrated from al-Āmulī include ʿUmar ibn Bujayr, Ibrāhīm ibn Khuzaym ⦗1⦘, al-Haytham ibn Kulayb, ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb al-Ḥārithī, and the judge al-Qāḍī al-Maḥāmilī.
He died in Rajab of the year 273 AH. It has also been said that he died in 269 AH, in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir.
