the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “In the fear-prayer there is no prostration for forgetfulness.”
ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd remarked: “It is not dependable.” (1)
- Al-Rabīʿ ibn Sulaymān ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn Kāmil al-Murādī * (cited by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, al-Nasāʾī, and al-Tirmidhī)
He was an Imām, ḥadīth scholar, eminent jurist, the last of the great figures, Abū Muḥammad al-Murādī—their client—an Egyptian, a muezzin, companion of Imām al-Shāfiʿī and transmitter of his teachings, chief of the muezzins at the congregational mosque of Fusṭāṭ, and the scribe who took down the dictations of the scholars of his era.
Birth: 174 AH, or a year earlier.
He heard ḥadīth from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb, Bishr ibn Bakr al-Tinnīsī, Ayyūb ibn Suwayd al-Ramli, Muḥammad ibn Idrīs al-Muṭṭalibī, Yaḥyā ibn Ḥassān, Asad al-Sunnah, Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam, Abū Ṣāliḥ, and many others.
He was not one who journeyed in search of ḥadīth; as for the claim that al-Shāfiʿī sent him to Baghdad—
(1) The author includes him in al-Mizan, 2/541, classifying him among the unknown narrators and judging this report as munkar (unacceptable), then cites the text in full. Abu Hatim al-Razi states: "Abd al-Hamid is مجهول (unknown); he transmitted from Ibn Umar a fabricated hadith"—a reference to the same narration. Al-Daraqutni, 2/58, relates the hadith through two chains from Abu Utba Ahmad b. al-Faraj with the same isnad and comments: "Abd al-Hamid b. al-Sari is its sole transmitter and he is weak." Al-Suyuti lists the narration in al-Jami al-Saghir, attributing it to Khaythama in his Juz. A parallel version comes from Ibn Masud in al-Tabarani; al-Haythami, al-Majma, 2/154, notes that it contains al-Walid b. al-Fadl, whom Ibn Hibban and al-Daraqutni declared weak.
