Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

a precious work, exhaustive within its scope. When the ḥadīth savants encountered it, they were captivated by it, yet they had not actually heard it because its chains were relatively low. They therefore set about re-narrating the book’s traditions from their own authorities with isnāds higher by one link, two links, and so forth, until they had covered the entire collection in that fashion, and they entitled their effort al-Mustakhraj (1) on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.

Several champions of ḥadīth undertook this task, among them: Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Rajāʾ (2), Abū ʿAwānah Yaʿqūb

(1) A mustakhraj is a work in which the compiler re-narrates the hadiths found in the collections of Bukhari and Muslim, supplying his own chains of transmission that do not pass through Bukhari or Muslim themselves. His isnad meets theirs at their teacher or at a higher level, one or more links above. The compiler is not required to keep the exact wording of the original text; he may relate the phrasing he received from his own teachers, provided the meaning is the same. Sometimes even the sense may differ, and therefore the wording of a mustakhraj may not be ascribed to the original Sahih unless identity of wording is established. Hence meticulous hadith critics, after citing the mustakhraj, add: “Its basis is in the two Sahihs.” The central rule is that the compiler does not narrate from Bukhari or Muslim directly, but from other transmitters—sometimes from their teachers or from narrators above them—always with a sound chain. Mustakhraj collections yield several advantages: 1. Any additional wording, completion, or explanatory phrase they contain is judged authentic, for it proceeds from the routes of the Sahih. 2. Their isnads may be higher (shorter) than those of the Sahihayn. 3. The multiplicity of routes strengthens a hadith and aids in preference when reports conflict. 4. They may record muddallas transmitters using an explicit statement of audition, whereas the Sahih gives the same report by simple an‘anah. 5. They may disclose names left ambiguous or omitted in the isnad or text of the Sahih. 6. They may separate interpolated remarks that are not part of the hadith, while the Sahih does not mark the separation. 7. They may present a hadith as marfu‘ (traceable to the Prophet) whereas the original Sahih records it only in a mawquf form or in a form resembling mawquf. 8. They may narrate from transmitters who later became confused, specifying that the hearing occurred before the confusion; the Sahih may quote the same transmitter without clarifying this point.
