207 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Marzūq al-Ṭarsūsī *
Utterly unreliable.
Ibn Ḥibbān ⦗1⦘ said: “He used to forge hadith.”
He narrated from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAṭāʾ. Muḥammad ibn al-Musayyab al-Arghiyānī related to us from him and cited a hadith which he traced back to the Prophet: “The earth will never be without thirty men like Abraham, through whom people receive their provision.” ⦗2⦘
This is a fabrication.
In that same year ⦗3⦘ died: the ḥāfiẓ Ibrāhīm ibn Awramah, Ṣāliḥ ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, Muḥammad ibn al-Shujāʿ ibn al-Thaljī, the commander Abū al-Sāj, and others.
208 – The Caliph al-Muʿtazz bi-llāh ibn al-Mutawakkil ibn al-Muʿtaṣim, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAbbāsī **
The caliph was Abū ʿAbd Allāh, Muḥammad.
Others have said his name was al-Zubayr ibn al-Mutawakkil, Jaʿfar ibn al-Muʿtaṣim, Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Rashīd ibn al-Mahdī, the ʿAbbāsid.
He was born in 232 AH.
He assumed the caliphate at the age of twenty—or a little younger—and was fair-skinned, handsome, and comely, among the most strikingly good-looking men of his time.
