al-Qassār—one of the teachers of the ḥadith master Abū Nuʿaym.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: “I wrote down ḥadith from him in Isfahān; he is truthful, reliable.” ⦗1⦘
I (the author) add: He was born in the year 203 AH and was the eldest of his brothers.
Al-Khallāl relates in Adab al-Qaḍāʾ: Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās told us, saying that Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī reported:
“When Ṣāliḥ arrived in Isfahān, his writ of appointment was read aloud in the congregational mosque. He wept profusely, and some of the elders also wept. When the recitation finished they began praying for him, saying, ‘There is no one in our town who does not love your father.’
He replied, ‘What brought me to tears was remembering him and imagining that he could see me in this situation.’ At the time he was wearing black.
He then said, ‘Whenever a devout or ascetic man visited my father, he would call for me so that I might look at him, for he wished me to become like such men.
Yet Allah knows that I only accepted this post because a debt had overwhelmed me and because of my many dependants.’ ⦗2⦘
Al-Khallāl adds: Ṣāliḥ was exceedingly generous.
Ibn al-Munādī said: He died in Isfahān, in Ramadan of the year 266 AH.
Abū Nuʿaym said: He passed away in 265 AH.
