Ibn Abī Ḥātim said, “He is reliable; we went to see him but did not meet him.⦘1⦘
Muḥammad ibn Makhlad added, “He was also known as ‘Ibn al-Bustanbān.’”
He passed away in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 263 AH.
Some scholars recorded his given name as al-Ḥusayn.
Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj likewise narrated from him, and in Sarrāj’s collection are his transmissions from Ibn ʿUlayyah and Abū Badr al-Sakūnī.
198 – ʿAṭiyyah, son of the Imām Baqīyah ibn al-Walīd al-Ḥimṣī *
He reported copiously from his father, and I am not aware of his taking ḥadith from anyone else.
He was an elder and a transmitter of ḥadith, though not especially precise; rather, he lived to an advanced age and became solitary in his narrations.
Those who transmitted from him include: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿImrān al-Aṣbahānī, ʿUbayd ibn Aḥmad aṣ-Ṣaffār al-Ḥimṣī, Aḥmad ibn Hārūn al-Bukhārī, Abū ʿAwānah, Ibn Abī Ḥātim, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, and others.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said, “He was somewhat heedless, yet essentially truthful.⦘2⦘”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad reported: “I heard him say, ‘I am ʿAṭiyyah ibn Baqīyah and my reports are pristine; when ʿAṭiyyah dies, the ḥadith of Baqīyah will disappear.’”
He died in 265 AH.
