He also said: “Generosity is to cast this world aside for the one (1) who needs it, and to turn to Allah, aware of your own need for Him (2).
The finest means by which a servant may seek closeness to his Lord are: acknowledging his poverty before Him, adhering to the Sunnah, and seeking his livelihood from lawful sources.
The master Abū Ḥafṣ died in 264 AH; another report puts it at 265 AH—may Allah have mercy on him.
191 – al-Saffār, Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb ibn al-Layth al-Sijistānī
The ruler Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb ibn al-Layth al-Sijistānī, who seized control of Khurasan.
It is said that he and his brother ʿAmr ibn al-Layth once worked as coppersmiths; they then adopted an ascetic life and fought alongside Ṣāliḥ al-Muṭṭawʿī, who was waging war against the Khawārij (3).
Ibn al-Athīr (4) states: Ṣāliḥ gained mastery over Sijistān, but Ṭāhir ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṭāhir later wrested it from him. Dirham ibn Ḥusayn al-Muṭṭawʿī then appeared there, took possession of it as well, and appointed Yaʿqūb ibn al-Layth commander of his army. When Dirham’s followers perceived his weakness, they enthroned Yaʿqūb because of his skilful governance; Dirham yielded to them, and Yaʿqūb’s formidable prowess soon became famous.
