189 – Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbdak, Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿẓam al-Qazwīnī *
The imam, ḥāfiẓ, and trustworthy authority—the principal ḥadīth scholar of Qazwīn—Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿẓam al-Qazwīnī, was a learned scholar, prolific author, and a man of high standing. He was a contemporary of Ibn Mājah, yet his chains of transmission were higher and he was the elder.
He heard ḥadīth from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ, ʿAffān, al-Qaʿnabī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ, al-Ḥumaydī, Ḥassān ibn Ḥassān, and their peers.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū Nuʿaym ibn ʿAdī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim, Jaʿfar ibn Idrīs—the imam of the Sacred Mosque—Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Salamah, and others.
Abū Yaʿlā al-Khalīlī said: “He is reliable; there is unanimous agreement on that.”
He died in 271 AH.
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Munʿim informed us on more than one occasion; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Muḥammad the judge related to us while I was in the fourth session; ʿAlī ibn al-Musallam narrated to us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ṭalāb conveyed it; Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ghassānī told us; Jaʿfar ibn Idrīs al-Qazwīnī narrated to us in Mecca; Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbdak reported to us, saying: Ḥassān ibn Ḥassān al-Baṣrī narrated to us; Shuʿbah, from ʿAdī ibn Thābit, from Zir, from ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
“By Him who split the seed and created life, it is a covenant of the unlettered Prophet to me that no one loves me but a believer, and no one hates me but a hypocrite.”
