al-Ḥakam stormed off, abandoning al-Shāfiʿī’s circle. (1)
He later told me, “Al-Ḥumaydī stayed with me in the house for about a year, and he gave me Ibn ʿUyaynah’s book; yet they would not desist until they provoked between us the discord that eventually took place.” (2)
This report is related by al-Ḥākim from Ḥusaynak (3), on the authority of Ibn Khuzaymah.
Abū Ibrāhīm al-Muzanī said: “Al-Shāfiʿī once looked at Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam as he mounted his riding beast; he followed him with his gaze and remarked, ‘I would wish to have a son like him even if I owed a thousand dinars that I could not repay.’” (4)
Abū Shaykh narrated: ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān al-Makkī told us, “I saw Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam performing the forenoon prayer; every time he completed two rakʿahs he would make two prostrations. Someone close to him asked the reason, and he replied, ‘I prostrate in gratitude to Allah for having enabled me to pray those two rakʿahs.’”
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: “Ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥakam is trustworthy and truthful, one of the jurists of Egypt, and among Mālik’s followers.” (5)
I say: He studied under Mālik for a considerable period and is also numbered among that Imām’s leading disciples.
