Ibn al-Baṭṭī, who said: "ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Anbārī informed us; Abū Aḥmad al-Faraḍī narrated to us; Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; my grandfather narrated to us; Isḥāq al-Azraq narrated to us, from ʿAwf, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade me to sell what I did not have in my possession.’ (1)
ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ and Yūsuf al-Ghassūlī likewise told us: Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir told us; Ibn al-Bannāʾ told us; Ibn al-Busrī told us; al-Mukhalliṣ narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Buhlūl narrated to us; Isḥāq al-Azraq reported to us; Sufyān narrated, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: ‘I performed the pilgrimage with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and he did not fast on the Day of ʿArafah; I performed it with Abū Bakr and he did not fast it, and with ʿUmar and he too did not fast it.’ (2)
(1) Authentic. Reported by Abu Dawud (no. 3503); al-Tirmidhi (no. 1232); al-Nasa’i 7/289; Ibn Majah (no. 2187); Ibn al-Jarud, al-Muntaqa (no. 602); Ahmad 3/402–403; al-Bayhaqi 5/267, 317, 339; al-Daraqutni 3/9; and al-Tabarani, al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (nos. 3097–3105). A corroborating narration from Abd Allah ibn Amr is recorded by Ahmad (nos. 6628, 6671), Abu Dawud (3504), al-Nasa’i 7/288, al-Tayalisi (2257), and Ibn Majah (2188); its chain is hasan (reliable).
(2) Al-Tirmidhi (no. 751) also transmitted it through two routes—Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah and Ismail ibn Ibrahim—from Ibn Abi Najih, from his father, who said: Ibn Umar was asked about fasting on the Day of ʿArafah while at ʿArafah; he replied, “I performed Hajj with the Prophet ….” All narrators are trustworthy, and al-Tirmidhi graded the hadith as hasan. Ahmad 2/47, 50 likewise records it via Ismail ibn Ibrahim and Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah, both from Ibn Abi Najih, from his father, from Ibn Umar. ʿAbd al-Razzaq (no. 7829) relates it from Ibn ʿUyaynah, from Ibn Abi Najih, from his father, from an unnamed man, from Ibn Umar. It also appears in the Musnad 2/73 through ʿAffan, from Shaybah, from Ibn Abi Najih with this same chain.
