Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Makki al-Jurjani said: I heard ‘Abd al-Wahid ibn Adam al-Tawwawisi relate:
“I saw the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in a dream, standing in one spot with a group of his Companions. I greeted him, and he returned my greeting. I then asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, why are you standing here?’ He answered, ‘I am waiting for Muhammad ibn Isma‘il al-Bukhari.’ A few days later news of al-Bukhari’s death reached me; I inquired and found that he had died at the very hour in which I had seen the Prophet (1).”
Khalaf ibn Muhammad al-Khayyām said: I heard Muhayb ibn Sulaym al-Karmīni say:
“Al-Bukhari died among us on the night of Eid al-Fitr, in the year 256 AH. He was sixty-two years old. He had been alone in a house, and when morning came we found him lifeless.”
Ibn ‘Adiyy said: I heard al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn al-Bazzar al-Bukhari say:
“Al-Bukhari passed away on Saturday night, the night of Eid al-Fitr, during the ‘Isha’ prayer. He was buried on the day of Eid after the Zuhr prayer, in the year 256 AH. His lifespan was sixty-two years, less thirteen days (2).”
Muhammad ibn Abi Hatim said: I heard Abu Dharr say:
“I saw Muhammad ibn Hatim al-Khallaqani in a dream—he had been one of the students of Muhammad ibn Hafs—so, although I knew he was already dead, I asked him about my shaykh, may Allah have mercy on him: ‘Have you seen him?’ He replied, ‘Yes, I have seen him; there he is,’ pointing toward a section of the roof of the house. I then asked him about Abu ‘Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Isma‘il. He said, ‘I have seen him,’ and pointed skyward with such an elevated gesture that he nearly toppled over because of the height to which he was indicating.”
