= Reported by al-Tirmidhi.
The hadith scholar Ibn Hajar comments: "maqbul" (acceptable). Ibn Hajar normally uses this term for a transmitter who narrates only a small number of hadiths and for whom no reason has been established that would warrant rejecting his reports.
5 – Jamiʿ ibn ʿUmair al-Taymi. Al-Bukhari says: “There is a problem with his hadiths” (fi ahadithihi nazar). Abu Hatim: “Basically truthful, his hadith is sound.” Al-Saji: “Trustworthy.” Al-ʿIjli: “A reliable Successor (tabiʿi).” Ibn Hajar: “Trustworthy, but he makes mistakes and is mildly Shiʿi.” His reports are found in the four Sunan. Al-Tirmidhi graded his narration in the Sunan (Book of the Merits of Abu Bakr, chapter 4) as hasan (good).
6 – Habib ibn Salim. Al-Bukhari: “There is a problem with him.” Ibn ʿAdi: “None of the texts of his hadiths are objectionable, though he is inconsistent in the chains he transmits.” Al-Ajurri, quoting Abu Dawud: “Reliable.” Ibn Hibban lists him among the thiqat (reliable narrators). Muslim and the four Sunan compilers transmit from him. Ibn Hajar: “No objection to him.”
7 – Harish ibn Khurayt. Al-Bukhari: “There is a problem with him,” and also, “I hope (arja) …” Al-Muʿallimi remarks in his notes on Tarikh al-Kabir that al-Bukhari seems to mean: “I hope there is no objection to him.” In Tahdhib al-Tahdhib: al-Bukhari says in his Tarikh, “I hope he is righteous.” Abu Hatim: “No objection to him.”
8 – Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Khawlani. Al-Bukhari: “There is a problem with him.” Yet he is praised by Abu Zurʿa, Abu Hatim, ʿUthman ibn Saʿid, and a number of leading critics. Ibn Hajar: “There is no doubt that he is truthful.”
9 – Talib ibn Habib al-Madani al-Ansari. Al-Bukhari: “There is a problem with him.” Abu Dawud transmits from him. Ibn ʿAdi: “I hope there is no objection to him.” Ibn Hibban includes him among the thiqat. Al-Haythami declared him reliable in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid 5/106.
10 – Saʿsʿaʿa ibn Najiya. Al-Bukhari: “There is a problem with him.” He is a Companion; Ibn Hajar lists him in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib and in al-Isaba.
11 – ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Salman al-Ruʿayni. Al-Bukhari: “There is a problem with him.” Ibn Yunus, however, declared him reliable. Abu Hatim: “I have not seen any objectionable hadith from him; his hadith is acceptable.” Muslim transmits from him in the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbas spending the night at Maymuna’s house. Al-Nasaʾi: “No objection to him” (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 6/188). Ibn Hajar: “No objection to him.” Al-Bukhari nevertheless placed him in his book of weak narrators, whereupon Abu Hatim said he should be removed from that list.
In my view, the statement of al-ʿIraqi—that every narrator about whom al-Bukhari says “fi-hi nazar” must be abandoned—is neither consistent nor correct. Often al-Bukhari uses the phrase and is not seconded by the specialist critics. At times he intends only a particular isnad, as he notes in Tarikh al-Kabir 3/1/183 on ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Zayd, the man who saw the call to prayer: “fi-hi nazar, because he did not state that the transmitters actually heard from one another” (see also Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 6/10). Frequently he means the hadith itself rather than the transmitter. Therefore, caution and careful examination are required. See: al-Qawaʿid fi ʿUlum al-Hadith, pp. 254-257.
