al-Thaqafī; Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Jurjānī dictated to us in the year 405 AH, and said: al-ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad ibn Muʿādh al-Nīsābūrī narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf al-Sulamī narrated to us; Qabīṣah narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Isḥāq, from ʿĀʾishah bint Ṭalḥah, from ʿĀʾishah the Mother of the Believers, who said that the Prophet ﷺ was asked by his wives for permission to join a military expedition. He replied, “It is enough for you—your jihad is the pilgrimage.” (1)
In the year 264 AH, there died: Aḥmad, the nephew of Ibn Wahb; Abū Ibrāhīm al-Muzanī; Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī; and Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā.
169 – Zāj Abū Ṣāliḥ Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr ibn Rāshid al-Marwazī*
The Imām, ḥadith scholar, and reliable authority: Abū Ṣāliḥ Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr ibn Rāshid al-Marwazī, known as Zāj.
(1) The isnad is sound. Bukhari records it (6/57, Book of Jihad, “Women’s Jihad”) through Qabisah and Muhammad b. Kathir, both from Sufyan with the same chain; al-Bayhaqi cites it in his Sunan (4/326) through Qabisah from Sufyan.
Bukhari also transmits it (6/57) through Qabisah → Sufyan → Habib b. Abi Amrah → Aishah bint Talhah → Aishah, Mother of the Believers.
Ahmad (6/165) and Ibn Majah (no. 2901) narrate it through Muhammad b. Fudayl: Habib b. Abi Amrah → Aishah bint Talhah → Aishah, who asked, “Messenger of Allah, is jihad obligatory for women?” He replied, “Yes, their jihad without fighting is the hajj and the umrah.” This isnad is sound. Bukhari (4/63, Book of Hajj, “Women’s Hajj”) and Ahmad (6/79) also report it through Abd al-Wahid b. Ziyad: Habib b. Abi Amrah → Aishah bint Talhah → Aishah, who said, “Messenger of Allah, should we not go on campaign and fight with you?” He answered, “The best and most beautiful jihad is an accepted hajj.” Aishah concluded, “I shall never abandon the hajj after hearing this from the Messenger of Allah.”
The report is likewise found in Bukhari (3/302, Book of Hajj, “Merit of an Accepted Hajj”) and in the Musnad (6/67, 68, 71, 75, 79, 120, 166) through several routes from Habib b. Abi Amrah with similar wording.
