was a ring that one of them brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, “I killed its owner that day.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ therefore awarded the ring to him.
Awf ibn Mālik al-Ashjaʿī said: We confronted them together with a contingent from Qudaʿah and other Christian Arabs. They lined up for battle, and a Roman rider began charging at the Muslims. I kept thinking to myself, “Who will take care of him?” Accompanying me was a man from the Himyarite reinforcements who had nothing but a sword. Someone then slaughtered a camel, and the Himyarite asked him for a strip of its hide; he gave it to him. The Himyarite spread the hide out in the sun, pegged its edges with stakes, and when it had dried he cut from it a grip and fashioned it into a small shield. When that Himyarite saw what the Roman was doing, he lay in wait for him behind a rock. As the Roman passed, he sprang out, hamstrung his horse so that it collapsed on its legs and the foreigner was thrown off. He pounced on him and struck him with the sword, killing him.
Bakīr ibn Mismār told me, from ʿUmārah ibn Khuzaymah ibn Thābit, from his father, who said: I was present at Muʾtah. One of them challenged me to single combat, I struck him down, and he was wearing a helmet set with a ruby. I took it. When we withdrew in retreat I returned to Medina and brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who granted it to me. In the time of ʿUthmān I sold it for one hundred dinars and bought with that money a date orchard.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr narrated, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar told me, from ʿUrwah, who said: When the men from Muʾtah returned, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims went out to meet them. The people began throwing dust at them and saying, “You deserters! Did you flee in the path of Allah?” But the Prophet ﷺ said, “They are not deserters; rather, they are those who will regroup and attack again, if Allah so wills.”
