A hadith of ʿUmar ibn Shabbah has reached me through a very high chain of transmission. ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ ibn Badrān and Yūsuf ibn Aḥmad informed us, saying: Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir informed us; Saʿīd ibn Aḥmad informed us; ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Bundār informed us; Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhlis narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn Shabbah narrated to us; Abū Ghassān Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to me; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿImrān informed us, from Abū al-Nuʿmān ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik, from his father, from his grandfather, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched me to mark the highest points that demarcate the sanctuary of Medina. I therefore marked Sharf Dhāt al-Jaysh, al-Mushayrif, the high ground of Maḥīṣ, al-Ḥafyaʾ, al-ʿUsharāʾ, and Qalt (1).”
In that same year there died: Saʿdān ibn Yazīd al-Bazzāz; Muḥammad ibn ʿĀṣim al-Thaqafī; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maymūn in Alexandria; Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah, the author of the Musnad; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Quhzādh; ʿAbbād ibn al-Walīd al-Ghubarī (2); and Ḥātim ibn al-Layth al-Jawharī.
