except a Yemeni broadsword.” Bukhārī recorded this report.
Al-Wāqidī said: Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Tammār told me, on the authority of ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah, that the Prophet ﷺ said, “When Zayd was killed, Jaʿfar took up the banner. Satan then approached him, made life appealing, death repugnant, and dangled the world before his eyes. Jaʿfar replied, ‘Now—when faith has become firmly anchored in the believers’ hearts—you entice me with this world?’ He then advanced until he was martyred.” The Prophet prayed over him, supplicated for him, and said, “Seek forgiveness for him, for he has entered Paradise, flying wherever he wishes with two wings of ruby.”
Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid related from al-Shaʿbī that Ibn ʿUmar, whenever he greeted ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, would say, “Peace be upon you, O son of the two-winged one.” Bukhārī also transmitted this.
ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Thaqafī said: Yḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; ʿAmrah informed me that she heard ʿĀʾishah say, “When the news arrived of the slaying of Jaʿfar, Zayd ibn Ḥārithah, and Ibn Rawāḥah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat in the mosque, and sorrow was plainly visible on him, while I watched through a crack in the door. A man came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is the women of Jaʿfar…,’ and he mentioned their weeping. He ordered him to forbid them. The man went and returned, saying, ‘I have forbidden them,’ but added that they had not obeyed. The Prophet ordered him a second time to forbid them; he went, came back, and said, ‘By Allah, they have overpowered us.’ She said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then declared, ‘Then throw dust in their mouths.’ I said, ‘May Allah abase your nose! You neither carry it out yourself, nor leave the Messenger…’
