130 – al-Muʾayyad billāh Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mutawakkil ibn al-Muʿtaṣim
His brother appointed him heir-apparent to the caliphate after him, and the Friday sermon was delivered in his name throughout the provinces. Then a report about him reached al-Muʿtazz; he struck him, removed him from the succession, imprisoned him for a single day, and he was brought out dead.
It was said that he was seated on blocks of ice until he died of the cold. His body was then sent to his mother, who in turn sent word to Qabīḥah, the mother of al-Muʿtazz: “Before long you will see your son al-Muʿtazz like this.”
I say: That is exactly what happened, and Allah did not grant him any respite.
al-Muʾayyad was killed in Rajab 252 AH. He was a handsome young man.
