On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar, traced back to the Prophet: “If fighting in the path of Allah is taking place right at one of your doors, let no one leave except with the permission of his parents.” (1)
Ibn ʿAdī said: Mūsā ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to us; Aḥmad narrated to us; my uncle narrated to us; Ḥaywah narrated to us; from Abū Ṣakhr; from Abū Ḥāzim; from Abū Ṣāliḥ; from Abū Hurayrah, traced back to the Prophet: “A time will come upon the people when a summons will be issued concerning the Qur’an, and it will be taken up from the earth.” (2)
This chain is unique in raising the report to the Prophet.
Aḥmad, the nephew of Ibn Wahb, said: My uncle narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb narrated to me; from Ibn Jurayj; from ʿAṭāʾ; from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: “Indeed, the effeminate men are the offspring of the jinn.” (3)
It was said to Ibn ʿAbbās, “How can that be?” He replied, “He forbade—”
(1) Al-Tabarani records this tradition in his al-Muʿjam al-Saghir, 1:104, through the chain of Usama b. ʿAli b. Saʿid b. Bashir al-Razi, from Abu ʿUbayd Allah Ahmad b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Wahb. Its purport is corroborated by the hadith of ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿAs, transmitted by al-Bukhari, 6:97–98 (Book of Jihad, chapter: Jihad with parental permission), and Muslim, no. 2549 (Book of Piety and Kinship, chapter: Dutifulness toward parents). A man came to the Prophet asking leave to go on jihad. The Prophet said, “Are your parents alive?” When he replied, “Yes,” the Prophet told him, “Then strive on their behalf.” Muslim also reports the wording, “Go back to your parents and keep them good company.” Abu Dawud, no. 2528, has: “Return and make them laugh as you made them weep,” and Abu Dawud, no. 2530 (graded sound by Ibn Hibban, no. 1622), records: “Go back and seek their permission; if they allow you, then fight, otherwise honour them.”
(2) Although the specific chain mentioned earlier is weak, its meaning is sound through another isnad. Ibn Majah, no. 4049, relates—via Abu Muʿawiya, from Abu Malik al-Ashjaʿi, from Ribʿi b. Hirash, from Hudhayfa b. al-Yaman—that the Messenger of Allah said: “Islam will be effaced just as embroidery is worn away from a garment, until people no longer know what fasting, prayer, sacrifice, or charity are. One night the Book of Allah will be taken up, and not a single verse will remain on earth. Only a few elderly men and women will be left saying, ‘We found our forefathers saying this word: la ilaha illa Allah (there is no deity but God),’ yet they will know nothing of prayer, fasting, sacrifice, or charity.” Hudhayfa turned away, but the narrator repeated the report to him three times. On the third occasion Hudhayfa faced him and said, “The word will save them from the Fire,” and he said it three times. The chain is sahih, as noted by al-Busiri in Zawaʾid Ibn Majah, fol. 247, and declared sound by al-Hakim, 4:473, according to Muslim’s criteria; al-Dhahabi agreed.
(3) “The effeminate” refers to a male who exhibits female physical traits or behaviour—that is, a mukhannath.
