Sufyān ibn Wakiʿ?”
He answered, “Because when those ḥadiths were criticized and shown to Aḥmad, he recanted all of them except for the report of Mālik, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas: ‘When the supper is served…’ (1).
As for Ibn Wakiʿ, his copyist had inserted some reports into his collection, and he went on to transmit them. We spoke to him about this, yet he would not retract them.
Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūnus said, “Abū ʿUbayd Allāh’s narration does not constitute proof.”
Ibn Ḥibbān stated in al-Duʿafāʾ: “He began to cite from his uncle material that has no basis, as though the earth itself had brought forth the pieces of its own liver for him.”
Among what he transmitted from his uncle, from Mālik, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar—traced back to the Prophet ﷺ—is the ḥadith: “Allah has added a prayer to your prescribed prayers, and it is the Witr.” (2)

(2) Al-Zaylaʿi, Nasb al-Raya, 2/110, cites it and notes that al-Daraqutni transmitted the narration in Gharib Malik through Humayd ibn Abi al-Jawn al-Iskandarani → ʿAbd Allah ibn Wahb → Malik → Nafiʿ → Ibn ʿUmar. Al-Daraqutni deemed Humayd weak, and Ibn Yunus (Tarikh Misr) remarks that Humayd related from Ibn Wahb a solitary, objectionable hadith.
The editor comments: Despite the weakness of Humayd, the wording of the hadith is authentic, for Ahmad, 6/397 (via Yahya ibn Ishaq), and al-Tahawi, 1/250 (via Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqriʾ), transmit it from ʿAbd Allah ibn Lahiʿa → ʿAbd Allah ibn Hubayrah → Abu Tamim al-Jayshani → ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs → Abu Basrah al-Ghifari, in the prophetic form: “Allah has granted you an additional prayer; perform the witr between the night prayer and the dawn prayer.” This chain is strong, for Ibn Lahiʿa here is related by ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqriʾ—one of the narrators whose transmission from Ibn Lahiʿa is regarded as reliable—and Ibn Lahiʿa is not the sole transmitter: Ahmad, 6/7, also records it via ʿAli ibn Ishaq → ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak → Saʿid ibn Yazid → Ibn Hubayrah with the same isnad, a sound chain. سُفْيَانَ بنَ وَكِيْعٍ؟
قَالَ: لأَنَّ أَحْمَدَ لَمَّا أَنْكَرُوا عَلَيْهِ تِلْكَ الأَحَادِيْثِ، وَعَرَضوهَا عَلَيْهِ، رَجَعَ عَنْهَا عَنْ آخرِهَا إِلاَّ حَدِيْثَ مَالِكٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ (إذَا حَضَرَ العَشَاءُ (١)) .
وَأَمَّا ابْنُ وَكِيْعٍ، فَكَانَ وَرَّاقُهُ أَدْخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَادِيْثَ، فرَوَاهَا، وَكلَّمْنَاهُ فِيْهَا، فَلَمْ يرجِعْ عَنْهَا.
وَقَالَ أَبُو سَعِيْدٍ بنُ يُوْنُسَ: أَبُو عُبَيْدِ اللهِ لاَ تَقُوْمُ بِهِ حجَّةٌ.
وَقَالَ ابْنُ حِبَّانَ فِي (الضُّعَفَاءِ) : جَعَلَ يَأْتِي عَنْ عَمِّهِ بِمَا لاَ أَصْلَ لَهُ، كَأَنَّ الأَرْضَ أَخْرَجَتْ لَهُ أَفلاَذَ كَبِدِهَا.
رَوَى عَنْ عَمِّهِ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ:
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: (إِنَّ اللهَ زَادَكُمْ صَلاَةً إِلَى صَلاَتِكُمْ، وَهِيَ الوِتْرُ) (٢) .

قلت: لكن متن الحديث صحيح، فقد أخرجه من حديث عمرو بن العاص أحمد ٦ / ٣٩٧، من طريق يحيى ابن إسحاق، والطحاوي ١ / ٢٥٠ من طريق أبي عبد الرحمن عبد الله بن يزيد المقرئ كلاهما عن عبد الله بن لهيعة، أخبرنا عبد الله بن هبيرة، سمعت أبا تميم الجيشاني، سمعت عمرو بن العاص، عن أبي بصرة الغفاري مرفوعا " إن الله زادكم صلاة صلوها فيما بين صلاة العشاء إلى صلاة الصبح الوتر الوتر " وهذا سند قوي، فإن راويه ابن لهيعة عند الطحاوي عبد الله بن يزيد المقرئ وهو أحد العبادلة الذين إذا رووا عن ابن لهيعة يكون حديثه صحيحا، على أن ابن لهيعة لم ينفرد به، فقد رواه احمد ٦ / ٧ من طريق علي بن إسحاق، حدثنا عبد الله بن المبارك، أخبرنا سعيد ابن يزيد، حدثني بن هبيرة بهذا الإسناد وهذا سند صحيح، وفي الباب عن عمرو بن شعيب، عن =
