Ibrāhīm ibn Aḥmad al-Khabrī (1) in the year twenty-one. Abū Ṭāhir al-Salafī reported to us; al-Qāsim ibn al-Faḍl reported to us; Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Ṣayrafī reported to us; Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb the ḥāfiẓ, in the year 340 AH, reported to us; Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Uways, in the year 225 AH, narrated to us; my father narrated to me from Ibn Shihāb, from Mālik ibn Aws ibn al-Ḥadathān, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, from Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “We are not inherited from; whatever we leave behind is charity.” (2)
Muslim transmitted it through Abū Khaythama, and Abū Dāwūd through Ḥajjāj ibn al-Shāʿir—both from Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ṣāliḥ. Al-Nasāʾī transmitted it through ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā al-Ḥimṣī, from Maḥbūb ibn Mūsā, from Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī, from Shuʿayb ibn Abī Ḥamzah; both of these chains go back to al-Zuhri, but through ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, and this version is sounder.
The other transmission is still preserved, even though Abū Uways ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Aṣbaḥī is somewhat weak. The same criticism applies to his son—despite his being among the transmitters of the two Ṣaḥīḥs. The rest of the chain consists of trustworthy narrators, except for the teacher of our teacher, this al-Khabrī, about whose creed there has been some discussion.
