from Ibn Shihab, who said: Abu Usamah Sahl ibn Hunayf informed me that he heard Abu Saʿid al-Khudri say:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “While I was asleep I saw people being presented to me; they were wearing shirts—some of the shirts reached the breast while others were shorter—and ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab passed by wearing a shirt that dragged behind him.”
They asked, “How did you interpret that, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Religion.”
Agreed upon (1). Al-Nasaʾi also transmitted it from Muhammad ibn Yahya, and our chain to him is of higher rank.
Abu al-Maʿali al-Abarquhi (2) informed us; al-Fath ibn ʿAbd al-Salam informed us; Hibat Allah ibn Abi Sharik informed us; Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Naqqur informed us; ʿIsa ibn ʿAli dictated to us; Abu Bakr ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad al-Naysaburi dictated to us; Ibn Yahya reported to us; Muhammad ibn ʿUbayd reported to us; al-Aʿmash told me, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade a man to walk wearing a single sandal (3).
I read before Abu al-Maʿali Ahmad ibn Ishaq in Egypt: Muhammad ibn
(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, Sahih 1:69 (Book of Faith); also in the chapters on the merits of Umar ibn al-Khattab and on the “shirt” and “dragging the shirt” in dreams; by Muslim, Sahih, no. 2390 (Book of the Virtues of the Companions, chapter on Umar); by al-Nasa’i, Sunan 8:113 (Book of Faith); and by al-Tirmidhi, Sunan, no. 2287.
(2) Ahmad ibn Ishaq ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mu’ayyad; his biography is found in al-Mashyakha, fol. 4.
(3) The chain is sound. The same hadith is found in al-Nasa’i, Sunan 8:217 (chapter on the prohibition of walking with one sandal) through Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, who transmitted from Muhammad ibn Ubayd, with the wording: “idha inqata‘a shis‘u na‘li ahadikum fa-la yamshi fi na‘lin wahida hatta yuslihaha” (If the strap of one of your sandals breaks, do not walk wearing only the other until you have repaired it). It is also recorded by Ahmad, Musnad 2:253 (through Abu Mu‘awiyah from al-A‘mash); by Malik, Muwatta 2:916, and through him by al-Bukhari 10:261, Muslim 2097, Abu Dawud 4136, and al-Tirmidhi 1774, from Abu al-Zinad—al-A‘raj—Abu Hurayrah: “la yamshi ahadukum fi na‘lin wahida; li-yun‘il-huma jami‘an aw li-yakhla‘-huma jami‘an” (None of you should walk wearing one sandal; either put both on or take both off). Another chain appears in Ahmad 2:257, Muslim 2098, and al-Nasa’i 8:218 via al-A‘mash—Abu Ruzayn—Abu Hurayrah. A supporting narration from Jabir is reported by Muslim 2099 and Abu Dawud 4137.
